japanning
Some of our first restoration experiments were inspired by 17th century European japanning techniques. We wanted to create a bright and durable finish for some of our Anonymous chairs to ensure another chapter in their existence. The result is a rich colour that appears to emanate from within the chair itself rather than from light bouncing off the surface.
The process of japanning requires time, patience and the perfect recipe of pigment, spirit and lacquer. Our on-going Anonymous Chairs project showcases a variety of historical designs, in deep, vibrant colours.
We are also happy to take on commissions if you have a piece you would like us to lacquer, please get in touch.
